'Mersal' featuring Vijay in the lead role was released in theatres for the 2017 Diwali, and the blockbuster film has clocked 7 years. Fans have been celebrating Vijay's film with Atlee on social media, and 'Mersal' tops social media trends. Meanwhile, 'Mersal' cinematographer GK Vishnu recalled the film on social media, and he expressed his gratefulness. "Heart full of gratefulness. Can’t thank you enough @Atlee_dir for trusting me as a debutant. @actorvijay na, you have been very kind and generous. Capturing you is a dream come true. Mersal will always be a special film in all of our hearts," wrote GK Vishnu remembering 'Mersal' on its 7th anniversary.

GK Vishnu made his debut as a cinematographer with 'Mersal' and his classy visuals added rich flavor to the film to give a special cinematic experience for the audience. GK Vishnu then turned into a favorite cinematographer for Atlee, and he handled the camera for the successful director's next two films 'Bigil' and 'Jawan'. It is worth mentioning that GK Vishnu worked as a former associate to TS Suresh, George C Williams, Richard M Nathan, and PS Vinod.
'Mersal' marked Vijay's second collaboration with Atlee after the cop-drama 'Theri' and the successful duo then teamed up for 'Bigil' a couple of years later. Vijay played a triple role in 'Mersal', playing the characters of Vetri, Maaran, and Vetrimaaran. Each role portrays a different aspect of his persona, adding depth to the narrative. It became one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of its time as it grossed over Rs 250 crore, and the film also had Nithya Menen, Samantha, Kajal Aggarwal, SJ Suryah, Sathyaraj, Vadivelu, and Kovai Sarala in pivotal roles.
