Director Shyam Benegal, one of the most critically-acclaimed filmmakers in India, bagged the prestigious
Akkineni Nageswara Rao National award for the year 2012. The award was announced on Wednesday and it was revealed that the committee unanimously decided to present this honour to Shyam Benegal.
Talking to us about this development, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, says, Shyam Benegal is a creative director.
He doesnt just make movies, but holds a mirror to the society and highlights its many issues. Most of his films are centered on contemporary Indian experience. He has earned much critical acclaim even internationally and we are happy to be giving him this award. His film Ankur is still one of my favourites. I would say Shyam Benegal can be called the best director in Indian cinema after Satyajit Ray.
When we asked Nageswara Rao about the much-hyped film that will have him acting with his son Nagarjuna and grandson
Naga Chaitanya, he says, The work will start on the movie this year. I havent even heard the story yet. The director is narrating the script to Nagarjuna and will come to me next. I dont even know if we will be playing father, son and grandson or brothers! The story needs to be suitable for all three of us.
