I dont want to be a flash in the pan, says South boy Gulshan Devaiah who shot to fame with ShaitanAre you still basking in the glory of Shaitan?Honestly, I never expected the film to be a success. I knew Bejoy (Namibar) would make a good film. When he discussed the script with me, I had a feeling that he would make something special.
Plus, Anurag and Kalki spoke very high of him. However, I didnt quite know how the audience would react to it. The success came as a pleasant surprise because no one was willing to pick up the film till Anurag stepped in. Theres a running joke among us that Jisska Koi Nahi, Usska Anurag Kashyap Hai (laughs).
After Shaitan you have That Girl in Yellow Boots another film from Anurags stable. Actually, I completed That Girl... before Shaitan and Dum Maaro Dum even released. We premiered the film last year at the Venice Film Festival. So, basically its my first film. In fact, I got introduction credits in the movie. Yes, the film is very intense and my role is that of a gangster, named Chittiappa. But my role is not intense, its more comical. So, that balances things out.
Considering the kind of films you have done so far, do you see yourself doing something light-hearted anytime soon?Absolutely. You know I would love to do a mad David Dhawan comedy, something completely different from what Ive done so far. I dont want people to come up to me with roles that are similar to what I have done earlier. I want to show everyone that I am a versatile actor and there
isnt any genre that I cant pull off successfully.
So, are producers lining outside your door post Shaitan?Well, Ive been appreciated a lot. I have been getting a lot of offers, especially from reality shows. But honestly, thats something I really dont want to do. But to be honest, its not like the sky has opened up and its raining offers. Its getting me good attention and Im meeting a lot of established people from the industry. But things are slow as of the moment. I am starting a film with my friend soon. Its a small budget movie, but I love the story. Apart from that, there isnt much happening for now.
Does it bother you that those big offers are still elusive? Not really. See, I would love to do more movies, but I want my rise to be slow and steady. I dont want to be a flash in the pan. I want to be in the industry for a long time. Ill be honest with you everyone craves success and adulation, Im no different. But I want to earn it. Hardships along the way will help keep me grounded. I mean, I am being appreciated for my roles so far and Im happy.
Do you get a lot of female attention as well?Oh! Yes. Mostly women ask me if Im like the character KC that I played in Shaitan (laughs). But Im not complaining. I love it.
So, are you single or dating someone?Well, Im in a serious relationship with a wonderful girl. Our families are in the process of finalizing a date for the wedding. So, yes, Im taken.
