Finally, the vibrant festival of colours has arrived in the country amid the gripping election fever. Not many know that Holi is celebrated for two days, yes, you heard it right! The ‘festival of love’ lasts for a night and the following day, starting on the evening of the Purnima (Full Moon day) falling in the Vikram Samvat Hindu Calendar month of Phalgun.While the first evening is known as Holika Dahan or Chhoti Holi, the next day is called Holi, Badi Holi, Rangwali Holi, etc. During the joyous gathering, people smear colour on family, friends & known ones, and celebrate the occasion with food, loud music and dance.
Since the early 80s, South cinema especially Tollywood has provided its share of contribution in bringing the colourful festival to life on the silver screen. Telugu films have successfully smeared several hues in the lives of viewers through foot-tapping Holi songs and captivating Holi sequences. From ‘Sande Poddu Megham’ in Nayakudu to ‘Rangu Rabba Rabba’ in Rakhi, check out some popular Holi numbers in Tollywood and don’t forget to include them in the playlist.
Nayakudu – Sande Poddu Megham
This will be the first glimpse when it comes to Holi songs down south or perhaps even Indian cinema. Crooned by legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam, the peppy number showcased the spirit of Holi with everyone from a locality celebrating the colourful festival in style. Lyrics by Vennelakanti are spot on and above all, Ilayaraja stole the thunder with his lively music and energetic rhythm which made ‘Sande Poddu Megham’ an instant blockbuster. This song is from Kamal Haasan’s cult film ‘Nayakudu’ directed by Mani Ratnam.
Chakram – Rangeli Holi
Filled with loud Punjabi beats composed by the late Chakri, the song ‘Rangoli Holi’ became a runaway hit with the masses upon its release. While Shankar Mahadevan gave his sparky touch to the number by crooning it in a high-pitch voice, Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry nailed it with his meaningful yet catchy lyrics. Prabhas and Charmee Kaur danced quite well in this peppy number composed for Krishna Vamsi’s ‘Chakram’. The atmosphere is buzzing with the entire neighbourhood in action.
Rakhi – Rangu Rabba Rabba
Composed by ‘Rockstar’ Devi Sri Prasad and sung by Amalraj along with Priya Himesh, ‘Rangu Rabba Rabba’ is the perfect foot-tapping number to be played at a Holi party. Aided with the relevant lyrics penned by Suddala Ashok Teja, the song was picturised quite vibrantly in a sparkling way. Featuring a large number of dancers in the background, Junior NTR set the stage on fire with his dazzling dance moves and displayed some crackling chemistry with the gorgeous Ileana. This song is from Krishna Vamsi’s vigilante-drama ‘Rakhi’.
Gemini – Dil Deewana
This perky number was composed by RP Patnaik for Venkatesh’s 2002 gangster-drama ‘Gemini’. Sung by the talented Usha with lyrics penned by Veturi Sundararama Murthy, ‘Dil Deewana’ showcases the festival of Holi in a Marwadi household. Namitha displayed her captivating dance moves & alluring beauty in the solo number and looked scorching hot in several outfits. This was the second outing for the 37-year-old Gujarati in Telugu cinema.
Seetaramaraju – Ekasegathattha
Starring Nagarjuna and the gorgeous Sakshi Shivanand, the fast-beat number was composed by MM Keeravani for the 1999 actioner ‘Seetharama Raju’. Along with the stellar cast, Nandamuri Harikrishna also shook his leg for ‘Ekasegathattha’ sung by SP Balu, Sujatha and Keeravani himself. The song displays the celebration of Holi in a village and will surely lift the energy in the atmosphere.
