Unique animals with beards that will completely surprise you

In fashion and pop culture, beards often make headlines– from clean, sharp styles to rugged, untamed looks. But in the natural world, facial hair has been around far longer than barbershops. For many animals, beards aren’t about appearance at all. They help with survival in cold environments, signal dominance, or even play a role in attracting a mate.

Interestingly, across forests, mountains, and even deserts, several species are recognised instantly because of the beards they carry. Here are five animals whose natural beards are as functional as they are fascinating.

Orangutans

Orangutans live in the rainforests of Sumatra and Borneo and are among the few primates known for having noticeable facial hair. Adult males often grow thick beards, which adds to their strong appearance. Sumatran males usually have slightly longer beards than Bornean ones. Both species spend most of their time alone in trees, depending on their intelligence and strength to survive.

Bearded pigs

The bearded pig, found in Borneo and nearby islands, gets its name from the long bristles that hang from its chin and jaw. These whiskers form a natural beard that makes the animal stand out from other wild pigs. They usually move in groups through dense forests, searching for roots, fruits, and even small animals, and their bearded look makes them easy to recognise.

4/6

Markhors

The markhor, a wild goat found in the mountains from northern India to Central Asia, is one of the most fascinating goats in the world. Apart from its spiral-shaped horns, it also has a thick beard that can grow long and often looks different in colour from the rest of its coat. Once heavily hunted, the markhor has become rare and is now protected in many parts of its range.

5/6

Bearded dragons

Bearded dragons, native to Australia, prove that a “beard” doesn’t always mean hair. These lizards have a flap of skin under their chin that puffs up and darkens when they want to send a signal. They use this beard display to show dominance, attract a mate, or scare off threats– an important form of communication in their world.

Goats

Goats are perhaps the animals most closely linked with beards. Their chin hair is so iconic that the human “goatee” beard style is named after them. In many goat breeds, males often grow long beards, sometimes even grooming them. During the breeding season, these beards can also help attract females.
