6 science-backed secrets behind your dog’s super senses

Dogs are not just loving companions– they’re also very smart, alert, and special in many ways that we often don’t realise. From their amazing sense of smell to how easily they adjust to different places, dogs have developed some truly impressive skills over time. Whether you’ve had dogs all your life or just love being around them, these lesser-known facts show why they’re one of the smartest and most adaptable animals on earth.

A dog’s wet nose has a purpose

If you’ve ever felt your dog’s cool, wet nose and wondered why it’s like that, it actually helps them smell better. The moisture on their nose traps tiny scent particles from the air. When dogs lick their noses, they’re collecting those smells to understand them more clearly. That’s one reason why their sense of smell is so powerful.

3/7

They can see some colours

It’s a myth that dogs see only in black and white. They can see a few colours– mainly shades of blue and yellow. Their colour vision isn’t as strong as ours, but they have much better night vision. Their eyes have special cells that help them see well even when it’s dark.

4/7

Dogs sweat differently

Dogs don’t sweat all over their bodies like humans. Instead, they cool down by panting. They also have tiny sweat glands in their paw pads that release a bit of moisture to help control body temperature. Some of these glands also give off scents that make each dog’s natural smell unique.

5/7

Their sense of smell is super strong

Dogs can smell much better than humans– they have about 300 million smell receptors, while we only have around 6 million. This lets them pick up even the faintest scents. Their brains also have a special part that helps them sense pheromones– signals that animals use to communicate.

6/7

Every dog has a unique nose print

Just like humans have different fingerprints, every dog has a one-of-a-kind nose pattern. The lines and ridges on their nose are unique and can even be used to identify them.

7/7

Dogs have three eyelids

Most people don’t know this, but dogs actually have three eyelids. Along with the top and bottom lids, they have a third one called the nictitating membrane. It helps keep their eyes clean, spreads tears evenly, and protects against infections.
