What exactly happened

After completing her master’s degree in Biotechnology at Northwestern University in 2024, Ananya Joshi began her professional journey in the US, working under the F‑1 Optional Practical Training (OPT) programme at a biotech start-up. Over time, a company-wide downsizing led to her layoff, and as her OPT window narrowed, she faced mounting pressure to find a new job.Earlier she mentioned in her LinkedIn post, “I’ve been laid off from my previous role as part of a company-wide downsizing. There’s some urgency to this as my STEM OPT clock is ticking, and I need to secure a role within the next month to remain in the US.”

She decided to leave after failing to clear interviews

Months of job applications, interviews, and networking did not yield a suitable offer, and ultimately she made the painful decision to leave. Recently, she shared a tearful video of her departure.
In it, she described the moment as “by far the hardest step in this journey” and acknowledged that, though she had accepted her new reality, nothing really prepared her for saying goodbye. Her caption read, “America was my first home as a financially independent adult and that will always be a special thing to me … Though short‑lived, I really appreciate the life you gave me. AMERICA, I LOVE YOU.”
She confirmed through her posts that she had relocated to Dubai to seek a new start.

Social media reactions

As her video went viral on Instagram, reactions on social media remained divided. Many expressed empathy, relating to the pain of uprooting a life built abroad. One user commented, “Watching your video had me in tears … the ache, the tears. I can understand how tough it must be for you … may you … achieve that dream again.”On the contrary some users said, the farewell was filmed inside a first-class or business-class cabin, questioning the framing of her “struggle”, “Left the American dream to pursue the Dubai dream and weeping in a first class, such a tough life.”Another user said, “Oh to cry in an Emirates business class flight to go from America to Dubai. Living the dream I see. Hope my kids will be as privileged as you are today.”Some even dismissed her ordeal as a “privileged struggle,” arguing that not everyone has the options or resources to make such transitions.Ananya’s journey brings to light some challenges faced by many international students and workers, related to visa constraints, job market volatility, and the pressure of timelines. The OPT programme grants temporary work rights, but does not offer long-term security.
