Punjabi dhaba owner in Kochi speaks Malayalam like a local – but how? Viral video gets Shashi Tharoor’s attention
A video from Kochi is currently making its way across social media feeds, and it is drawing attention for a basic but striking reason. A Punjabi man, running a dhaba, is seen speaking Malayalam with ease. The clip has now become a talking point, with many viewers pausing to notice how naturally he handles the language.
What started as a regular interview has slowly turned into a widely shared moment, with people reacting to the unexpected mix of identity and language.
The person in the clip is Mohinder Singh Sethi, who owns Sethi Da Dhaba in Kochi. In an interaction with Manorama Online, he answers questions in Malayalam without hesitation.
His speech is smooth and confident, which has surprised many viewers who came across the video online.
For many people, the highlight of the video is the contrast. A Punjabi dhaba owner speaking Malayalam like a local is not something seen often.
This is what made the clip interesting and shareable. Viewers pointed out how comfortable he sounded, which added to the appeal of the video.
The response online has been largely positive, with users appreciating his effort to learn the language.
One user said, “He speaks Malayalam very well. I wish there were more people like him who learn languages and help enhance the culture and diversity of Indian states. When in any state, do as the locals do. Never forget your own culture and traditions but keep your mind open to learning about others as well.”
Another wrote, “This might be the most Malayali Malayali I have ever seen.”
A comment read, “Only Sardarji by appearance otherwise he comes across as a pucca #Malayalee speaks #Malayalam with a perfect accent!!!”
One more user added, “To get the Mallu’s twisted tongue (consonants) to an accurate degree and accent is not a mean achievement. Sardarji, tussi great ho! Adi polli.”
The video also received attention from Shashi Tharoor, who reacted to it online.
He wrote, “Wonderful to hear him articulate so fluently his satisfaction and appreciation for Keralites’ enjoyment of Punjabi food! Born and brought up in Kerala, so his fluency is no surprise, but great to hear amid the incongruity of his appearance! A striking affirmation of our fabled #UnityInDiversity!”
His comment added to the conversation around language and cultural identity.
As highlighted by News18, Mohinder Singh Sethi has been living in Kerala for many years. His daily interaction with customers at his dhaba may have helped him learn Malayalam over time.
Being closely connected with locals likely made the learning process natural.
