The greatest aviation mysteries of all time!

Recently, there was news that there might be some development to the disappearance of the ill-fated Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, that literally vanished into thin air in 2009. Dr. Vincent Lyne, formerly with the University of Tasmania, identified a single bright pixel in a global terrain model of the ocean floor—an anomaly that he suggests could be the 'exact hiding spot' of the long-lost Boeing 777. According to him, the aircraft is located near the junction of the longitude of Penang airport, and a flight route found on the pilot-in-command's home simulator. While we hear more on that, here's taking a look at the 5 greatest aviation mysteries of all time...

Amelia Earhart

Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan disappeared over the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937, while attempting to fly around the world, and their fate remains one of aviation's enduring mysteries, with various theories about what happened to them and their plane. Post her disappearance, a large search and rescue operation was conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy, but it was unsuccessful. Theories suggest that they crashed into the sea, or got captured by the Japanese or landed at an island, but died out of starvation.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 vanished on March 8, 2014, en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Operated by Malaysia Airlines, the international passenger flight disappeared from radar screens, and the reason for its disappearance remains undetermined. The event is considered one of aviation's biggest mysteries and the deadliest instance of an aircraft disappearance. Now, after Vincent Lyne's theory, there might be some development to the alleged crash, hopefully.

D. B. Cooper

On November 24, 1971, a man known as D. B. Cooper (or Dan Cooper) hijacked Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 305 during its journey from Portland, Oregon, to Seattle, Washington. Cooper, claiming to have a bomb, demanded $200,000, and four parachutes upon the plane's arrival in Seattle. After the plane landed in Seattle, Cooper released the passengers in exchange for the ransom and parachutes. He then ordered the crew to refuel the aircraft and set a course for Mexico City, with a stop in Reno, Nevada. Shortly after takeoff, Cooper jumped from the plane's aft door with a parachute and the ransom money over southwestern Washington. The FBI maintained an active investigation for 45 years but suspended it in 2016.

The Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle is a loosely defined region in the North Atlantic Ocean, roughly bounded by Florida, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico, known for purported mysterious disappearances of ships and aircraft, though investigations attribute these to natural phenomena and human error. Many people also say that the disappearances are the work of the paranormal, though scientists have constantly debunked that theory.

Flying Tiger Line Flight 739

Flying Tiger Line Flight 739 (FT739/FTL739) disappeared over the western Pacific Ocean on March 16, 1962. The Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation propliner was chartered by the U.S. Army and carried 96 military passengers from Travis Air Force Base in California to Saigon, South Vietnam. The flight was also carrying 11 civilian crew members and four Vietnamese citizens. The flight's planned stops included Honolulu, Wake Island, Guam, and the Philippines. After refueling in Guam, the plane disappeared en route to the Philippines. All 107 people on board were presumed dead, and no trace of the plane has ever been found.
