A year later, Sodhdev established Amer, the now Jaipur. And for 40 years, thereafter, Jaipur and Amethi were both ruled from Amethi. The Nehru family''s association with Amethi goes back by more than a century.

It began when Motilal Nehru fought an adoption case on behalf of Raja Bhagwan Bux Singh, father of Raja Rananjay Singh and grandfather of Sanjay Singh. In 1976, Indira Gandhi introduced son Sanjay to Rananjay Singh, who suggested that he contest from Amethi.<br /><br />Amethi came into its own under Rajiv Gandhi. It used to be said of the constituency that one doesn''t need directions to get there. The smooth roads, the dazzling lights and the roar of industry would show the way. Today, Amethi is in ruins. There are more potholes than road, industry has shut down, and except for four hours in the day there is no electricity. Which must explain the profusion of posters put up across Amethi by a self-styled youth group called, Amethi Yuva Dal. <br /><br />Sample this: <br />"Yeh hi hai VIP Amethi. Andheri nagari mein aapka swagat hai." And then, " Arre paanch saal ke besharmon, sharm karo, kuch sharm karo.
