In the largest of the three-phase in Bihar assembly elections, voting is under way in 94 constituencies today. The second phase could be make or break for both alliances. The fact that the home districts of both chief minister Nitish Kumar and his long-standing rival Lalu Prasad are part of this phase adds an extra edge to the contest. The one that would view this phase as most crucial would be the LJP. It includes the areas that Ram Vilas Paswan had come to view as family pocket burroughs – Hajipur and Rosera – the two seats that the party won in 2015 both came from this part of the state. Its vote share of 6.7% in this phase was also significantly higher than its state-wide vote share of 4.8%. If the LJP is to be more than a spoiler and win a significant number of seats, this is where the bulk of them will have to come from.
