in a sudden change of schedule the tamil nadu chief minister j. jayalalithaa on tuesday canceled her visit to new delhi for a meeting with the planning commission deputy chairman on health grounds. according to a government release on tuesday evening, jayalalithaa was ``indisposed due to a long standing spinal problem''. ``as this problem got aggravated due to excessive strain in the past few days, thereby causing severe low back pain, the chief minister has been advised complete rest for a few days by her doctors,'' the release said.
she had instead deputed the state finance minister c. ponnaiyan along with a team of senior officials, including the chief secretary p. shankar and finance secretary p.v. rajaram to participate in the meeting on wednesday with the planning commission deputy chairman k.c. pant, to finalise tamil nadu's annual plan. ironically, the decision to cancel the trip was so sudden that even jayalalithaa's cabinet colleagues were unaware of the cancellation. some of them were lined up at the chennai airport to see her off.
