A 25-year-old man of Pakistani heritage has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of an Indian restaurant manager who was killed in a road collision with a car while cycling home in Reading, south-east England, on Valentine's Day this year. Shazeb Khalid was found guilty of the murder of Vignesh Pattabhiraman, 36, last month following a trial at Reading Crown Court and was sentenced at the same court earlier this week. Thames Valley Police, which had conducted the murder investigation, condemned the sickening nature of Khalid's actions which resulted from a misunderstanding.

"I am pleased with the lengthy sentence handed to Khalid in particular. It reflects the truly sickening nature of his actions," said Detective chief inspector Stuart Brangwin, Senior Investigating Officer of the Major Crime Unit at Thames Valley Police.

"Vignesh was a kind, gentleman who moved to the UK on the promise of a job providing opportunity and hope for him and his wife, Ramya. He was killed on a misguided belief that he was responsible for instigating an investigation into the Vel restaurant employing illegal immigrants," he said.

"Ramya's life was shattered when her husband's life was taken and Vignesh's wider family and friends were similarly devastated. I can only hope that the sentences passed today provide some relief for Vignesh's family," he said.

On February 14, Vignesh Pattabhiraman was cycling back from his workplace at Indian restaurant Vel in Reading and was discovered by police at Addington Road following reports of a road traffic collision. He was declared deceased at the Royal Berkshire Hospital and a murder investigation was launched.

An eight-year-old boy sustained burn injuries after two teenager allegedly placed a firecracker in his pocket while he was on his way to buy some candies in an east Delhi area, police said on Friday. The incident was reported Thursday from Chilla village of Mayur Vihar Phase-I, they said.

The child told police that he was headed for a market to purchase candies, when two boys on a motorcycle put in his pocket some firecrackers which exploded, an officer said.

"The child is changing his statement, but we are reviewing CCTV footage of the area and have launched an investigation," the officer said.

The boy was taken to a hospital, where his condition was reported to be stable.

"We have reviewed CCTV footage of the location and are trying to identify the suspects. Although the footage from the area where the child described the incident happened shows he was alone, the investigation is still ongoing," the officer added.

He further said the District Development Council (DDC) and Block Development Council (BDC) polls were also held successfully in Jammu and Kashmir.

The National Conference-Congress combine pulled off a spectacular victory in maiden elections in Jammu and Kashmir after abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. In the 90-member Assembly, the National Conference won 42 seats, BJP 29, Congress 6, PDP 3 and the rest of the constituencies were won by others including independents (7).

Two captured Pakistan militants who masterminded a 2021 bomb attack killing 13 people -- including nine Chinese nationals -- were slain in an escape attempt on Friday, police said.

The men were being transferred between prisons in the eastern city of Lahore when an ambush targeted their convoy, according to a counter-terror police official who asked to remain anonymous.

"Unknown terrorists attacked one of the police vans to free their accomplices," he said, adding that both men died "as a result of firing" from their would-be jail breakers.

The official said the men were "facing life imprisonment" for the 2021 attack in northwestern Pakistan which targeted a bus carrying Pakistani and Chinese staff working at a hydropower dam construction site.

China is Pakistan's most important regional ally and has pumped millions of dollars into its cash-strapped neighbour to fund major infrastructure projects.

However Islamabad struggles to protect Beijing's workers who are despatched to manage construction.

A fire broke out aboard a small oil tanker off Germany on Friday, and seven crew were rescued from the burning vessel in the Baltic Sea, emergency services said.
Eyewitnesses reported a loud explosion around 9:15 am local time (0715 GMT), said local newspaper Ostseezeitung, and dark smoke was seen billowing from the ship, which the report said is used to resupply vessels at sea with fuel.

"A fire broke out on the Annika tanker on Friday morning," the Central Command for Maritime Emergencies said, adding that the ship was carrying about 640 tonnes of oil.

"All seven crew members on board were picked up and brought to shore," they said, later adding that some of them had sustained minor injuries.

Emergency service vessels were fighting the fire and more rescue crew headed on helicopters to the ship, about 4.5 kilometres (three miles) off shore.

The German-flagged ship is 73 metres (240 foot) long and 12 metres wide. It was anchored and now also attached to a tugboat, according to the central command.

The statement added that the ship was in the Mecklenburger Bay in waters between the towns of Kuehlungsborn and Warnemuende.

Video published by Bild daily online later showed a fire-fighting vessel aiming a powerful jet of water at the ship and no more large flames or clouds of smoke visible.

Rescuers said about four hours after the blast that the fire was still burning inside the hull and that rescue crew were assessing whether they could go onboard the vessel to douse the flames.

Asked about the risk of a capsize or oil spill by AFP, a central command spokesman said "the investigation is ongoing".

Their nationalities were not immediately known. The vessel, escorted by a coast guard patrol boat, was taking them to a port in southern Crete.
The long voyage from Libya to Crete has emerged this year as a new route for people from Africa, the Middle East and Asia to seek a better life in Europe. People who have completed the crossing told Greek authorities they paid smuggling gangs up to 9,000 euros ($9,800) each for the passage.

More than 3,500 people have made the crossing so far this year, according to the United Nations refugee agency, out of a total of 42,000 who entered Greece illegally - mostly reaching the eastern Aegean Sea islands in small boats from Turkey.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav reached Jayaprakash Narayan International Centre Thursday night and lambasted the Yogi Adityanath government for barring its main gate behind tin sheets apparently to prevent entry. It is the birth anniversary of the socialist leader on October 11.
