JAMMU: In the continued offensive against political leaders and people associated with electioneering, militants shot dead a sarpanch and a National Conference (NC) leader in Rajouri and Poonch districts, which go to polls on September 16, official sources said on Saturday.
Militants shot dead NC leader Nazir Hussain in Baghote village of Poonch district on Friday night.
Hussain had joined the party only a fortnight back, sources said.
Militants entered into the house of the Sarpanch Haji Mohammed Riyaz at Shadra Sharif area of Rajouri district and fired at him from close range early on Saturday killing him on the spot, they said. Riyaz was canvassing for a candidate in the area.
Meanwhile, NC leader from Mendhar Mohammed Sadiq, whose two sons were allegedly abducted by militants on Tuesday night after burning down his house, was found missing, they added.
