GUWAHATI/AIZAWL:
Assam and
Mizoram are at “war” over their border, albeit that of words and not action, with both accusing each other of encroaching into their territories.
While Assam chief minister
Himanta Biswa Sarma told the state Assembly on Monday that Mizoram has encroached more than 40 times into Assam since 2016, Mizoram has vowed to protect its boundary from alleged aggression from its neighbouring state.
Mizoram shares about 160km-long border with Assam.
Mizoram home minister Lalchamliana said that his government does not wish to be the first one to initiate action in the border issue with Assam. “Instead, we are ready to take any measure to protect the territory of the state at all cost. Mizoram government condemns the renewed acts of violence by incursion into Mizoram soil recently,” he said.
In Guwahati, Sarma stated that there have been more than 200 incidents of encroachment and aggression from Assam’s neighbours. He stated this in a written reply to leader of the opposition Debabrata Saikia in the Assam Assembly.
