MANGALORE: Union minister for railways D V Sadananda Gowda's younger sister Savithri Shivaram, 56, passed away in Mangalore on Tuesday. She was suffering from cancer.
Incidentally, Sadananda Gowda had met Savithri at a private hospital where she was admitted for treatment earlier in the day; spoke to doctors treating her before leaving for Delhi. Savithri, family sources said, passed away after he boarded a flight for Delhi.
Gowda who learnt of Savithri’s demise at Mumbai returned to the city in the next flight. In a brief chat with TOI at the Mangalore International Airport, Gowda said, “Doctors had said she was much better and could pull through at least a few more days. It was sad to hear the news,” he said. Savithri Shivaram was a Zilla Panchayat member in Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat from the BJP and represented Belanduru constituency in Puttur taluk.
The district unit of BJP in a condolence message expressed grief at the demise of Savithri. A resident of Devaragunda, Savithri is survived by her husband Shivaram, two daughters, her mother and four brothers including Sadananda Gowda, and a sister. A member of Rashtra Sevika Samiti, Savithri had also served as president of Puttur taluk panchayat from 2009 to 2011. Her final rites will be performed at Peraje house on October 8 at 8am.
