Rulebook for different types of heels

Heels are strange little things, aren’t they? They can make your legs look longer, your posture stronger, and somehow even boost your mood. But they can also be confusing. So many types. So many dos and don’ts. And let’s be honest, sometimes they just hurt. This isn't a rulebook, just a personal guide for navigating the world of heels without losing your balance (or your sanity).

2/11

The Stiletto

These are the heels you reach for when you need to make a statement. They’re tall, sleek, and kind of demanding. They don’t go with just anything; you have to build the look around them. Think of them like the bold friend who steals the spotlight a bit but makes the night unforgettable.
Wear with: A fitted dress, a suit that actually fits you, or those jeans you only wear when you’re feeling yourself. Not ideal for errands or bad sidewalks, obviously.

3/11

Block Heels

Block heels are the happy middle ground. You still get the height, but you don’t feel like you’re walking on a knife’s edge. You can actually wear them for a few hours without mentally counting down the seconds till you can take them off.
Pair them with: Midi skirts, office trousers, or wide-leg pants. They’re also perfect when you’re dressing up but don’t want to look like you tried too hard.

4/11

Kitten Heels

Kitten heels have a bad rep with some people, but they’re honestly underrated. They’re small, classy, and quietly stylish. Not showy, but that’s the point.
Style with: Slim-cut pants, vintage blouses, or shift dresses. They’re the heel equivalent of a confident whisper.

5/11

Wedges

These give you lift and let you walk. You’ll never have to do the tip-toe shuffle. Great for garden parties or anywhere you might be walking on grass or gravel.
Match them with: Maxi dresses, breezy pants, or anything you’d wear on vacation. They scream “summer” in the best way.

6/11

Platforms

They add inches without the steep pitch. You feel tall, but not tortured. If you’re into 70s fashion or want to look taller without committing to pain, this is your shoe.
Wear them with: Flared jeans, short skirts, or oversized blazers. A little drama is welcome here.

7/11

Ankle-Strap Heels

There’s something polished about a thin strap around the ankle. It draws attention, in a subtle way. But be careful, some styles can cut off the leg line, especially if the strap is thick or the shoe is too chunky.
Best with: Shorter dresses or cropped pants that let the ankle breathe. Bonus if your toenails are painted.

8/11

Mules

No buckles, no zippers, no effort. Heeled mules are casual but clean. They give height without looking like you're going anywhere fancy.
Try them with: Straight-leg jeans, knit dresses, or anything you’d wear to a coffee date or casual meeting. Super versatile.

9/11

Cone Heels

They’re kind of artsy. If you're tired of all your shoes looking the same, these are a nice change. The heel flares out at the top, then narrows toward the bottom. Unique, but still walkable.
Style with: Outfits that aren’t too safe. Think oversized shirts, layered dresses, or wide belts. These heels deserve a look that’s just as interesting.

10/11

Slingbacks

They feel like something your stylish aunt used to wear, and now you get it. Slingbacks are elegant without trying. They’re usually not too high, which makes them a solid pick for work or day-to-night outfits.
Pair with: Cigarette pants, midi skirts, or dresses with structure. Great for meetings where you want to look pulled-together.

11/11

Peep-Toes

These are in-betweeners. They’re open enough for warmer weather but still dressy. You get to show off a pedicure, which is never a bad thing.
Good with: Soft prints, A-line skirts, and spring outfits. Peep-toes don’t love socks or tights, so save them for bare-leg days.
