NASA’s next giant leap to the Moon is getting a high-fashion upgrade through a groundbreaking collaboration between Prada and Axiom Space. Prada has co-developed special spacesuits for NASA astronauts to wear during their upcoming lunar mission. The suits are meant to provide astronauts with durability, mobility and comfort in an extreme environment.
For the unversed, NASA astronauts are taking part in the Artemis III mission, where they will wear Prada spacesuits created in collaboration with the US-based space company. The mission is set to mark humanity’s first crewed Moon landing since Apollo 17 in December 1972. The collaboration announcement is not new; the duo unveiled the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit - the name of the spacesuit designed for Artemis III astronauts - in 2024.

The collaboration draws on Prada’s expertise in advanced materials, innovative designs, and manufacturing techniques. Prada has contributed to the development of the suit’s outer layer, which is created to protect astronauts from extreme temperatures and also from micrometeoroid impacts while exploring the Moon’s surface.
Well, comfort matters the mostWhat makes the partnership unique is its progress in developing the liquid cooling and ventilation garment, a high-performance layer worn underneath the spacesuit. Unlike the protective outer shell, the LCVG primarily focuses on astronaut comfort and body temperature regulation as well. This will play an important role in keeping the astronauts safe and comfortable.
The whole suit is created using 3D modelling techniques, which are incorporated by the company’s expertise in engineered knitting, advanced materials, and innovative design concepts. The design of this spacesuit aims to provide support to astronauts on the Moon's surface for approximately eight hours.

The partnership formed between two diverse fields such as fashion design and the exploration of outer space illustrates that innovation will happen because the only limitations are one’s imagination. By combining two different modes of transportation - high-speed fashion runways and a relatively slow-moving lunar surface – this collaboration has made history.
It will be included in fashion-created history as long as there is written documentation of it. Events leading up to, during, and following the exploration of the Moon by the humans will provide an opportunity for fashion designers and scientists to work together to create a new understanding of what is possible in both fields.
