Expert speak: Why are retro references so big now?Designer Ria Shah explains a few reasons behind this.
She says, “As we see new and upcoming fashion trends, we keep seeing an increase in retro fashion. That is mainly because retro is something that’s very classic, it’s come around now and will come around again, even centuries later. What’s today’s fashion will be retro 20 years down the line. Also, with many designers playing with prints now, there’s no better inspiration than retro fashion, which is heavy on print play and yet has a modern touch and an eclectic, playful vibe.”
She adds, “The retro elements you will see now are flared pants and front tying blouses, bell sleeves, shimmery headbands and polka dots. I also think a royal touch attached to retro, such as with pearls, can be a complete game-changer.”

‘Vintage look is big with brides, too’
Retro is big with bridal make-up, too
Who says the olden charm is only restricted to clothes, jewellery and shoes? Beauty-wise, the glamorous years of the 60s and 70s are right on the block. Says Nisha Sablok, celebrity and bridal make-up artist, “This is especially big with the classic winged liners and graphic liners. Well-defined lips with darker colours like plum, dark pink, magenta and rust. Having structured hair is very big now in weddings as brides want a vintage look. It looks fab and adds character to the face, it’s a game-changer.”
