7 common foods that can cause severe constipation

Constipation is a common problem that usually results from inadequate dietary fiber. It causes discomfort and pain, which is further accompanied by symptoms such as bloating and gas. Severe constipation is diagnosed when a person experiences less than one bowel movement in a week. Various factors contribute to this condition, including our regular diet choices. Understanding how some foods affect digestion is very important for managing constipation effectively.

2/8

Processed grains

Processed grains, which include items such as, white rice, and white pasta, are low in dietary fiber. In the processing of grains, the bran and germ of the grain is removed, stripping away valuable nutrients. Fiber is known to add bulk to stool and help with regular bowel movements. A 2022 study showed that when fiber intake was significantly increased the severity of constipation among participants had reduced. Therefore, it is advisable to replace processed grains with whole grains, which are higher in fiber.

3/8

Dairy products

Another common culprit for causing constipation is dairy. Children and infants may be particularly sensitive to dairy, which can lead to digestive issues. In 2021, a clinical study identified proteins in cow's milk that can cause constipation due to slowed bowel movements and irritation. While some people may experience diarrhea due to lactose intolerance, others might find that dairy contributes to their constipation.

4/8

Fried or heavily processed foods

Fried foods and highly processed snacks or junk foods like pizza or chips can also cause a higher risk of constipation. These foods are generally rich in fat but poor in fiber, which delays digestion. Aditionally high salt in these foods tend to dehydrate because they suck water out from the intestines, causing stool to be harder to pass. To avoid this risk, one should consider replacing these snack with healthier ones which are high in fiber like fruits and vegetables.

5/8

White flour products

Foods made with white flour, such as pastries, cookies, and white bread, lack the necessary fiber for healthy digestion. These products can contribute to constipation due to their low fiber content. Whole grain alternatives like whole wheat bread and oatmeal should be preferred as they provide more fiber and promote better gut health. By choosing whole grain options, individuals can improve their digestive health and reduce the risk of constipation.

6/8

Red meat

Red meat is often linked to constipation due to its high-fat content and tough protein fibers that are difficult for the digestive system to process. The iron content found in red meat can also contribute to constipation. Limiting red meat intake may help alleviate this issue. Instead of relying on red meat for protein, individuals could opt for leaner meats or plant-based protein sources that provide more fiber.

7/8

Sugary foods

Sugary foods such as candies, chocolates, and sugary snacks can lead to higher rates of constipation. These foods often contain unhealthy fats and lack the dietary fiber necessary for healthy digestion. The presence of sugar in various products, including jams and ice creams can exacerbate the problem by providing empty calories without any beneficial nutrients. Reducing the consumption of sugary snacks while increasing fiber-rich foods can help maintain regular bowel movements. Keep a check on the intake of sugar and sugar based delights to keep digestive ailments at bay. Also ensure that you avoid processed sugar to keep the gut healthy.

8/8

Frozen foods

While convenient, many frozen meals lack nutritional value and can contribute to constipation due to their high levels of salt, fat, and preservatives. Not all frozen foods are detrimental, frozen fruits and vegetables can be beneficial as they provide essential fiber needed for digestive health. When selecting frozen meals, it is crucial to read labels carefully and choose options that include whole grains and vegetables while minimizing unhealthy fats.
