Struggling with urinary problems? What men should know about benign prostate hyperplasia
Struggling with urinary incontinence can affect your daily life. One of the common causes of such a condition in men is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is a condition in which the prostate gland enlarges, leading to urinary problems. While the condition is non-cancerous, if left untreated, it can affect one’s quality of life. According to a study by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease, approximately 50% of men over the age of 50 experience some degree of BPH.

“Although it is difficult to live a normal life with BPH, its symptoms are easy to manage with timely care and new medical advancements like water vapor therapy, which is now available in India”, said Dr. T Manohar, Chief of Urology Services, Uro-oncology and Kidney Transplantation, Laser, Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeon Apollo Institute of Renal Sciences, Bengaluru.
There are several other factors that contribute to BPH development. Age is one of the main factors, as the chances of developing BPH increase with age. A change in hormones, particularly an increase in dihydrotestosterone (DHT), plays a significant role in the growth of the prostate. Genetics also plays an important role, as a person with a family history of BPH is prone to the risk. BPH can also be developed due to lifestyle choices like poor diet, obesity, etc.
“Any delay in seeking treatment can lead to consequences like urinary tract infections, bladder stones, and kidney damage. It also affects daily tasks like work, sleep, social, and professional activities. It is critical to recognize the symptoms and get medical assistance right away”, added Dr. Manohar.

Diagnosis and treatment options
“Medical history, physical tests including uroflowmetry, and some other tests such as urine tests and prostate-specific antigens are done to diagnose BPH with obstruction. There are various BPH treatments available today, including medications, surgery including laser procedures, and minimally invasive surgeries(MIST), for people affected by BPH. The treatments are offered depending on the severity of the symptoms, associated patient medical condition and size of the prostate. While medications aid in the relaxation of the prostate muscles for non-severe cases, water vapor therapy uses steam to reduce the prostate tissue and relieve the symptoms in severe cases” and prevent long term side effects that could arise out of medications” , said Dr Manohar.Living a happy life requires the right treatment option for BPH.
