How to keep Peonies from flopping over after they bloom: Simple gardening tricks that help support heavy flowers, strengthen stems, and maintain upright, beautiful garden beds

Flowering peonies are some of the most popular ornamental flowers in home gardens. Their impressive and luxurious flowers, combined with an exquisite fragrance, make them one of the top picks for any greenery enthusiast. But as much as we all love the flower's blooming period, many growers face the problem of flowers becoming too heavy to hold onto the stem, causing the plant to flop over. Fortunately, gardening professionals assure us that it is perfectly normal and can be prevented.

2/7

Why do peonies naturally flop over

Despite being a beautiful flowering plant, peonies have relatively weak stems, which makes them unable to support their large and rich flowers. Once they become fully bloomed, they may get too heavy and fall down. Moreover, the plant itself may not be developed enough to keep the flower standing straight and healthy. According to gardening experts, it is completely natural and does not necessarily mean anything bad for the plant.

3/7

Install plant supports early

The most efficient way to prevent your peonies from flopping over is to use plant support rings. As they are called, this type of plant support helps peonies stand straight by guiding their stems up during growth. The best way to install the rings is to do it while the shoots are still small and the plant has not yet developed fully. It will make sure that the stems remain healthy and grow within the boundaries of the rings.

4/7

Provide proper spacing between them

Peonies can easily lose their shape due to improper spacing. When plants are too close to one another, they start to compete with each other for sunlight, thus developing fragile and unhealthy stems. Therefore, it is crucial for gardeners to provide appropriate spacing that will guarantee good airflow and prevent excess water from accumulating near the base of the flower.

5/7

Don't over-fertilise soil

It is vital to use fertiliser when growing any plant, but excessive fertilisation can harm the flower's development. For instance, peonies that are fed with a soil that is too nitrogen-rich grow numerous leaves, which leads to thin and fragile stems that are unable to keep flowers in a raised position. Therefore, the best way to help peonies remain healthy is to feed them with low-nitrogen fertilisers only.

6/7

Prune regularly to ensure structure

To make sure that your peonies grow as they should, it is important to regularly prune and deadhead the plant. It allows the latter to redistribute the nutrients and direct its energies into root and stem formation instead. Moreover, regular cutting of the plant removes excessive stems that may cause additional weight and lead to the flowers bending down because of the plant's poor condition.

7/7

Choose optimal locations to grow them

In addition to the methods listed above, it is essential to remember that peonies have specific conditions that should be provided for growing. First, it is important to note that areas where there are no winds or heavy rains are ideal for planting. Peonies should always be located somewhere where they can get enough light while receiving moderate protection from the weather.
