Strict parenting: 5 times when it fails parents

There are different parenting styles

Ever since categorizing parenting styles have been in practice, parents have started learning about the different types that exist, but prior to that they were oblivious to how other parents carry out their parenting.

But in spite of the different parenting styles, the image of parenting that exists in our minds is that of a strict parent. A major part of parenting is devoted to schooling kids; teaching them the rights and wrongs, correcting the wrong and inculcating good habits.

2/6

They induce low self esteem in kids

While it is commonly believed that strict parents bring out the best outcome in kids, several times it hampers the esteem level of kids.

Constant supervision and authoritarian parenting sometimes clog the flow of confidence in kids. They render them incapable of having a belief in themselves.

While the intention behind strict parenting is entirely focused on the development of kids, several times they do not serve the purpose.

3/6

The kids are likely to have unresolved issues

Strict parenting, no matter how beneficial they are, creates a barrier between the kids and the parents. The kids are unable to approach their parents for guidance.

The draconian parenting style does not encourage a friendly conversation between the parents and the kids and in a way widens the scope of parental guidance.

These kids often look for solutions outside their homes among friends and companions.

4/6

The kids have a distorted understanding of emotions

Kids who have been brought up by strict parents often have a skewed understanding of emotions.

Though their parents have their own way of showing emotions, the young mind is unable to grasp it in the right way. Kids need to be conveyed emotions in a straightforward manner and not in an indirect way.

This indirect way of showcasing emotions distorts the knowledge of kids about emotions.

5/6

The parenting style influences the personality of the kid

Parents have the major impact, or it can be said the sole impact on kids. The way they raise the kids shape the personality of the kid and the behaviour it develops.

A child brought up under conditions where there was strict punishments and scoldings for every mistake, big or small, will definitely understand the world in that manner. Not just that these kids will also show the same behaviour among peers.

6/6

What are the different types of parenting styles?

Broadly speaking there are four parenting categories: authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved.

Another version of parenting styles categorizes them as elephant parent, tiger parent, helicopter parent, lawnmower parent, snowplow parent, bulldozer parent, dolphin parent, jellyfish parent, etc.

Parenting techniques have been a favorite search term over the internet these days. New parents, or those who are planning to extend their family, are always looking for newer ways and are also open to understanding the concepts of parenting.
