How to stay calm when someone tries to provoke you

Ever feel your blood boil when someone pokes at your buttons? That co-worker's snide remark, a passive-aggressive relative, or online trolls - they crave your reaction. But psychologist Ziad Roumy recently shared his game-changing wisdom: Power lies in staying unshaken and calm. In a recent video shared on social media, Ziad revealed his three effective tips to deal with people who try to provoke you. Here's what they are:

2/4

"Try observing them"

"Don't respond, don't defend yourself and simple focus on observing them. you'll notice that they are way predictable. You'll also notice that it was your reaction that was giving them power and without it they cannot push any further," Ziad Roumy said in the video, and rightly so. Practice this in low-stakes moments: Notice micro-expressions, tone shifts. Over time, detachment builds a mental shield. Calm becomes your default superpower.

3/4

"Talk less"

Sharing his second tip, he said, "The less you talk the less predictable you become, and this throws them off balance. That's because now they are not able to read you and twist your words and use it against you." So clam up when provoked, and by doing this you will throw them off: Confusion breeds their frustration, not yours. Start small: Nod, smile faintly, change topics. It's not rudeness; it's a strategy to preserve your mental peace.

4/4

"Focus on your bodily sensations"

Elaborating this tip, he shared, "It's okay to feel anxious, tense or irritated around them. Don't fight it. Try to feel it instead. That's how you process these negative emotions without letting them pollute your thoughts or actions." Practice daily: Tense spots signal triggers early. Around provocateurs, breathe into sensations; watch them fade. Result? Less reactivity overall. You keep power intact, emotions flow through. With reps, triggers weaken - you evolve from "pushed" to poised, owning every encounter.

Staying calm in chaos can feel like a superpower in today's world. Remember, "the more you practice this, the less people can trigger you and the more you keep your power," he added.
