5 diyas to light on Dev Deepawali at these places of your home

Dev Deepawali, also called "Diwali of the Gods" is one of the most spectacular celebrations, observed on the full moon night of Kartik. This year it is being celebrated on November 5 and the city of Varanasi offers the most spectacular views of this festival, where the ghats are lit with hundreds of diyas and it is believed to be when the gods themselves descend to Earth to bathe in the sacred waters of the Ganges. The ghats shimmer in perfect harmony, reflecting like stars on the river’s surface. The air fills with chants, conch sounds, and the fragrance of incense as devotees perform deep daan — the offering of lamps — to honor Lord Shiva. It is said that one this day lighting diyas at home is also very auspicious and brings in good fortune, health, and prosperity. This piece of information talks about the five important places of your home where you should light a diya during the evening hours of Dev Deepavali. And make sure to put some akshat (raw rice) below the diya too. It is also said that apart from these five places one can also light diyas in odd numbers like 7, 11, 21 on this day between 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm.

The first diya that one should light after the sunset is in the mandir of the house. It is the central point of your home and where the gods and goddesses reside, so it is important to offer the first diya to the deities.

The next diya should be lit in the Ishan Kon or Northeast direction of the house. In Vastu Shastra, Ishan Kon, or the northeast corner, is considered the most sacred and spiritually charged direction. The term “Ishan” comes from Ishvara, meaning “God” and this direction is ruled by Lord Shiva. It is believed to be the zone of divine energy, purity, and enlightenment.

The third diya should be placed in the kitchen of the home. As per Vastu Shastra, the kitchen is the heart of the home, where not just food but energy, health, and prosperity are cultivated. Lighting a diya in the kitchen symbolises welcoming more wealth, health, and prosperity in life.

Fourth diya that one should light on Dev Deepawali is near the holy tulsi plant of the home. It is regarded as a symbol of purity, prosperity, and positive energy, believed to attract divine blessings and promote harmony within the home.

And last but not the least is the main door of the house. In the Vastu Shastra, the main door of a home is considered the “gateway to energy”, the point through which prosperity, health, and happiness enter the household. It is often referred to as the Simha Dwara (lion gate), symbolizing strength, protection, and the first impression of the home’s aura.
