A desi student has just sued Oxford University for £1 million over ‘negligent’ teaching of Indian history. In what has created a buzz online, Indian-origin Oxford student Faiz Siddiqui has sued the university for a staggering £1 million, for “boring classes” 16 years ago that he says may have shot down his chances of being a successful lawyer. Siddiqui (38), who studied modern history at Brasnose College of the university, accused its staff for “negligent” teaching of his specialist subject course — Indian history, which led to him getting second–class honours. The judgment is awaited later this month. Here’s a lowdown of other lawsuits that have stuck out in public memory...

Not a Break-Up song, but a break-up lawsuit!

Cheryl Grey from Michigan filed a suit and sought more than $8,000 from Wylie Iwan from Washington (whom she met on Facebook), after he put an end to their online romance. She reportedly sued him for a digital camera, professional baseball tickets and other things she bought him during their six-month relationship, and said he broke her heart. A Michigan judge dismissed the lawsuit.

Sued over ‘fast food measurements’

A fast-food chain was sued in 2013 over its foot-long subs by a man from New Jersey, who claimed they were only 11 inches long. The class action lawsuit alleged that customers got less than what they paid for. The chain is said to have agreed to settle the suit for about half a million dollars. They also put their fast food in question to a tape measure to guarantee what they advertised!

Barking dogs do bite (the wallet)

Talk about the bark being worse than the bite! In 2015, in Seattle, Woodrow Thompson sued her neighbours, the Nortons over the disturbance caused by their barking dog. Wilson claimed that the dog is known for “raucously, wildly bellowing, howling and explosively barking,” with intentional infliction of emotional distress. Her suit had claimed that its barks and howls were as loud as 128 decibels through double pane windows, which is akin to the takeoff of a jet. She won $500,000 in the court case.

Man claims TV show left him dizzy

No stomach for gross stuff? Shut the TV! Austin Aitken from Cleveland sued a channel for $2.5 million when he claimed that an episode of its TV show caused him “suffering, injury, and great pain.” He is quoted to have said that watching contestants eat rats on the show made him dizzy and light-headed, making him vomit and run into a doorway. The judge threw the case out, calling it frivolous.

Who owned the ‘monkey selfie’?

One of the most iconic images in the age of technology has to belong to a crested macaque who snapped its own selfie on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, in 2011. The monkey, Naruto, took a camera that was positioned by British nature photographer David Slater and snapped a selfie. It drew grins from across the world and went down in history as one of the most offbeat cases of copyright law. Questions arose as to who owned the pic? The hand that snapped the picture or shutter owner Slater? While the latter claimed copyright ownership, an international animal rights organisation claimed infringed on the monkey’s copyright. The court ruled that the animal cannot have a copyright over his photo.

Man sues company for boring job

This man definitely raised the bar for work ethics when he sued his former company for his ‘boring’ job. Parisian Frederic Desnard (44), is said to have filed the lawsuit as he said performing four years of menial tasks at a Paris-based perfume company was so boring that it made him depressed and forced him to quit. This was said to be France’s first-ever legal claim for a ‘bore-out’.

In hot water…err, tea

An American woman, Julie A Garcia, filed a lawsuit against a well-known coffee chain claiming that the cup lid was defective, causing its contents to spill out and burn her badly. She claimed that she suffered first-degree burns to her lower abdomen and second-degree burns to her thighs sue to this and reportedly sought a whopping $132,000 (£85,000) for her suffering and medical bills.

Woman sues for catching flu over wrong weather report

An Israeli woman apparently sued a TV station for making a wrong weather prediction. The report had said it would be sunny, but it rained, which apparently caused her to dress lightly and catch the flu. She sued for $1000 and won.

Student sues school for being awakened by teacher

After he fell asleep in class and was awakened by a teacher who smacked her palm down on his desk, 16-year-old Vinicios Robacher’s parents sued the Connecticut Board of Education for the hearing loss he is said to have suffered on account of it.

AND GUESS WHAT? THIS CELEB WAS SUED FOR STEALING A PET CHICKEN!Singer Kristina Karo filed a suit against actress Mila Kunis for $5k. She claimed that when she and Kunis were children living in Ukraine, Kunis stole Karo’s pet chicken. She eventually dropped her suit.
