Breathing Easy: 5 cities in India with AQI less than 40

There’s no denying the fact that air pollution is one of the biggest concerns in India. As the pollution continues to be a challenge across many Indian cities, there are still some with remarkably clean air offering a breath of fresh air—literally.
As of April 27, 2025, here are five cities that stood out with Air Quality Index (AQI) levels below 40, marking them as having “Good” air quality. These places not only offer clean air but are also rich in natural beauty and cultural significance.

2/6

Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands – AQI: 22

Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, generally maintains a good AQI. Today, the city recorded an AQI of just 22, which is great. This tropical haven is known for its pristine beaches and lush greenery. Some of the top attractions here include Cellular Jail, a historic colonial prison turned museum and Radhanagar Beach, Asia’s one of the best beaches.

3/6

Belgaum, Karnataka – AQI: 26

Belgaum, also known as Belagavi, is a historic city in Karnataka celebrated for its remarkably good air quality. Today, the city recorded an impressive AQI of 26. Nestled amidst the Western Ghats, Belgaum is home to several must-visit attractions, including the historic Belgaum Fort, the scenic Gokak Falls, and the Military Mahadev Temple, a lush green retreat maintained by the army.

4/6

Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu – AQI: 30

This small coastal town also in Tamil Nadu maintains a good AQI throughout. Today it recorded an AQI of 30. Being close to the Bay of Bengal, Nagapattinam benefits from ocean breezes that disperse pollutants efficiently. When here do visit Nagore Dargah, a revered pilgrimage site, Velankanni Church, a famous Christian shrine by the sea and Dutch Fort, a remnant of colonial history.

5/6

Palkalaiperur, Tamil Nadu – AQI: 39

Palkalaiperur is a small locality near Trichy and recorded an AQI of 39. This quiet town benefits from its semi-rural landscape and lack of heavy industry. Some prime attractions here include Nearby Rockfort Temple, a hilltop temple and Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, a short drive away.

6/6

Chennai, Tamil Nadu – AQI: 38

Known more for its buzzing cityscape than breezy air, Chennai is defying expectations with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of just 38 today—firmly in the “Good” category. While you're soaking in the surprisingly clean air, be sure to explore local gems like Marina Beach (one of the world’s longest urban beaches), the historic Kapaleeshwarar Temple, and the colonial-era Fort St. George.
