Which mountain has five distinct ecological zones?

Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, boasts five distinct ecological zones, showcasing a dramatic vertical transition from tropical farmland to arctic ice. This freestanding giant offers a unique natural laboratory, allowing climbers to experience diverse climates, vegetation, and wildlife within a single journey to its summit.

There are plenty of mountains spread across all continents, all with something special about them. Some are most climbed, some dreaded, and some with tremendous cultural importance. But few of them are as ecologically diverse and geographically striking as Mount Kilimanjaro.Rising from the East African savanna in northern Tanzania, this freestanding giant is not only the highest mountain on the African continent, standing at 5,895 metres, but is also one of the most ecologically varied places on the planet. Here’s how: Mount Kilimanjaro is famously known for having five distinct ecological zones, each with its own climate, vegetation, wildlife, and environmental challenges. These zones stack vertically along the mountain, meaning, as you keep going up the mountain, you will notice a natural progression from tropical farmland to arctic ice. This remarkable stratification makes Kilimanjaro a unique experience, and also a natural laboratory for studying ecosystems, climate change, and human interaction with the environment. It also gives climbers the rare opportunity to experience dramatically shifting landscapes within a single journey to the summit.

Cultivation Zone

At approximately 800–1,800 metres or 2,600–6,000 feet), you are at the lowest of Mount Kilimanjaro’s five ecological zones, that is, the cultivation zone. It is also called the lower slopes. This is the only region where year-round human habitation and agricultural activity happens. This is due to the fertile volcanic soil and a warm, wet climate. This zone supports extensive farmland where communities grow food items like bananas, coffee (especially the renowned Arabica), maize, beans, and various vegetables. The biodiversity here is considerable; small mammals, reptiles, insects, and hundreds of plant species thrive in the relatively mild environment.

Montane Forest Zone

As you climb higher, approximately at an elevation of 1,800–2,800 metres or 6,000–9,200 feet, above the cultivated lower slopes, lies the montane forest zone. This is an exceptionally lush belt of rainforest that receives the highest rainfall of any part of the mountain. This zone acts as a crucial water catchment for Tanzania and Kenya, absorbing moisture from clouds and releasing it slowly into rivers that sustain millions of people. Wildlife is equally diverse. Some of the notable inhabitants include colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, bushbucks, and a wide variety of birds, including turacos and hornbills.Because the forest is relatively undisturbed, it remains one of the most ecologically vibrant parts of Kilimanjaro.

Heather–Moorland Zone

At an elevation of approximately 2,800–4,000 metres or 9,200–13,100 feet, the rainforest gradually thins, giving way to the heather–moorland zone, where temperatures start to drop and vegetation becomes more specialised to withstand harsher conditions. Here, the landscape is dotted with giant heathers, groundsel and lobelia plants (stunning alien-like plant species), grasses and small shrubs, and rocky outcrops and open moorland. In this zone, the nights can go below freezing temperatures, while daytime temperatures can be surprisingly warm. The air is thinner here. Wildlife is less abundant, but one can still spot antelopes, several species of birds of prey, and small mammals such as mice and hyraxes

Alpine Desert Zone

Things are now starting to look a lot different from here on. Located at an elevation of approximately 4,000–5,000 metres or 13,100–16,400 feet, this region receives little rainfall. Whatever moisture there is, gets evaporated quickly due to intense sunlight and strong winds. This is basically a desert area where temperatures can even exceed 30 degrees Celsius (86°F) during the day and plunge below freezing at night. As expected, vegetation is sparse and limited to hardy, low-growing species such as moss, lichens, and a few desert-adapted shrubs. As for wildlife, a few birds like the white-necked raven can be seen here. Climbers describe the zone as otherworldly, almost lunar, with its barren expanses and dark volcanic cones.

Arctic Summit Zone

This is the summit, and it is located at an elevation of 5,000 metres or 16,400 feet and above. This is the final ecological zone on Mount Kilimanjaro where the environment resembles that of the polar regions more than tropical Africa. Here, oxygen levels are roughly half of what they are at sea level, temperatures remain below freezing most of the time, and conditions can shift quickly from clear skies to blinding snowstorms. Here you will find Kilimanjaro’s iconic glaciers, permanent ice fields, rocky, wind-sculpted terrain, and the crater of Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s main summit cone. Plant and animal life are almost nonexistent. Climbers pushing toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point on the mountain, often begin their summit attempt at night to reach the peak at sunrise. The reward is a breathtaking view of glaciers, volcanic formations, and the vast plains stretching across Tanzania and Kenya.Mount Kilimanjaro's five ecological zones, from the fertile cultivation zone to the icy arctic summit, make it one of the most ecologically diverse mountains on Earth. Here you are able to see the transition from tropical farmland to frozen tundra in just a matter of days.
