Bungee jumping remains one of the most intense yet safest adventure activities when every detail is respected. Thousands of people jump every year across the country without incident, and a little awareness is all it takes to be one of them. Here are the five non-negotiable aspects every jumper, especially first-timers, should keep in mind. Niharika Nigam, Managing Director, Jumpin Heights, shares some essential tips that are a must-follow before going for the adventure sport.
1. Choose an operator for whom safety is non-negotiableNot all platforms are built or operated to the same standard. Look for sites that follow Australian/New Zealand safety norms, use cords manufactured with the original New Zealand technique, invite independent international auditors regularly, and maintain a publicly verifiable record of zero major incidents over a large number of jumps. A genuine operator will happily share audit certificates and insurance details when asked. Taking two extra minutes to verify these points is the single most important decision you will make.
2. Get weighed accurately, twiceThis is something every safe operator will do anyway. The elasticity of the bungee cord is calculated precisely for your body weight, usually within a 40–110 kg range. Even a small discrepancy can affect the experience. Reputed sites weigh every jumper on digital scales at registration and again on the platform itself. Eat lightly, remove heavy jewellery or belts. The cord has to be exactly right for that safe perfect rebound.
3. Dress for the jump, not for the photoComfortable, fitted clothing and secure lace-up sports shoes are mandatory. Loose garments, scarves, hoodies, slippers, or any accessory that can flap or fall must be avoided. Long hair should be tied tightly, and pockets emptied completely. Phones and action cameras are allowed only with approved chest or wrist mounts. The less you carry, the cleaner and safer the jump.
4. Listen to what your jump master saysThe instructors on the platform have guided thousands of nervous jumpers before you. When they tell you where to look, how to position your body, or when to dive on the countdown, follow instantly. Hesitating or trying to “style” the jump at the last second is the most common cause of awkward flips. Trust their instructions; they are designed to give you the smoothest, most exhilarating free-fall possible.
5. Time your jump with the weatherIn India, October through March is the safest and most pleasant time to visit most sites. The monsoon months make platforms slippery and valley winds unpredictable, so responsible operators typically close from June to September. Within the day, early morning or late afternoon slots usually have calmer air and better light for photographs. Always check the forecast and confirm with the operator before heading out.
