Puneeth Nivasa Movie Review: a story about storytelling that loses its way

Critic's Rating: 2.0
By Susmita Sameera

The film opens with a businessman recounting his journey from having nothing to establishing himself professionally, and eventually venturing into filmmaking. In a park, he narrates a story to his friend, this framing device becomes the entry point into a layered narrative centered on the struggles of aspiring filmmakers.

Within this story, a director attempts to sustain himself by making low-budget films, supported by actor Abhijith Rao, who is portrayed as someone willing to back meaningful storytelling. Among the film crew and workers exists Mallu (Vitthal Nagraj), an orphan living in a shed and surviving through daily wage labor. His admiration for Puneeth Rajkumar shapes his aspirations, as he observes film shoots and nurtures the desire to tell his own story one day.

A turning point occurs when an early pack-up on set leads to an impromptu interaction—Abhijith asks Mallu to narrate a story using the people around him as characters. What follows is the internal narrative of Puneeth Nivasa, where Mallu imagines not only creating a film but also building a home, reflecting both his creative ambition and personal longing for stability.

The first half remains focused on individuals driven by passion for cinema despite financial and professional limitations. The second half introduces elements of real estate and the practical challenges of survival, shifting attention toward the socioeconomic realities Mallu faces. His journey is framed through resilience and optimism influenced by his admiration for Puneeth Rajkumar.

Structurally, the film relies on multiple layers of storytelling—stories within stories—which creates a fragmented narrative. The transitions between these layers lack clarity, making it difficult to follow the progression coherently. The inclusion of several themes without sufficient development results in a scattered presentation where individual ideas do not fully connect.

The performances remain functional without adding depth to the characters, and the technical aspects follow a basic execution without distinct impact. Overall, the film presents an idea centered on aspiration and struggle but is hindered by its disjointed narrative approach and uneven integration of themes.
