Black Sheep Movie Review: a thriller that tries too hard

Critic's Rating: 2.0
By Susmita Sameera

The movie begins with a shocking accident near Southend Circle in Bangalore. Inspector Pruthvi arrives to manage the scene, while Amar (Vishal Kiran) watches silently from the police car. Deeply disturbed by what he sees, Amar begins hallucinating the dead victim and becomes obsessed with the incident, unable to move on. The vision haunts him, and he is often seen chasing after it.

Noticing Amar’s growing obsession, Inspector Pruthvi tries to redirect his focus by assigning him a case file related to the Mumbai mafia. Aware of Amar’s deep interest, especially in mind-hunting books, Pruthvi hopes he can bring a fresh perspective to the case.

As the story slowly unfolds, we learn more about Amar’s identity, his traumatic past, his relationship with his wife Sandhya (Shivangi Davey), and how everything connects to the case. The first half of the film is intense, building a haunting atmosphere around Amar’s mental struggles and hallucinations. In the second half, the film shifts gears and delves into the Mumbai underworld, introducing several key villains, including Reddy, Danny, Sulthan, Prabha, John, and others.

While the film has an intriguing premise and a strong start, it loses momentum as the story progresses. The narrative becomes cluttered with too many characters and subplots, making it difficult to stay engaged. Although the film maintains its focus, it demands significant attention without delivering a satisfying payoff. Performances are decent, and the technical aspects are adequate. Overall, it’s a thriller that tries too hard and ends up less effective.
