India-US Nuclear Talks Focus On Small Modular Reactors, Future Energy Expansion

India and the United States are intensifying cooperation in the nuclear energy sector, with New Delhi focusing on two major objectives: rapidly expanding nuclear power generation and building a manufacturing ecosystem around Small Modular Reactors or SMRs. The discussions come amid a high-level visit by an American nuclear industry delegation that is holding meetings with Union ministers, state governments and major Indian companies. As India’s electricity demand rises sharply because of AI, semiconductor manufacturing, logistics and industrial expansion, policymakers are increasingly viewing nuclear energy as critical for a stable 24/7 base-load power supply. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said the state wants to become a major hub for next-generation nuclear projects and SMR technology. The talks have gained momentum after the passage of the SHANTI Act 2025, which opened India’s tightly controlled nuclear sector to greater private participation. India is also looking to strengthen indigenous manufacturing capabilities while seeking foreign expertise and investment in advanced nuclear technologies. Major Indian firms including Reliance Industries, Adani Group, Tata Power, JSW Energy and Larsen & Toubro are expected to engage with the visiting American delegation as India positions nuclear energy at the centre of its future industrial and strategic plans.
