A major oleum gas leak at a chemical unit in Maharashtra’s Palghar district triggered large-scale evacuations, with over 2,600 people moved to safety, including nearly 1,600 school students. The incident occurred at the Bhageria Industries Ltd facility in the Boisar MIDC area on the outskirts of Mumbai. The leaked substance, identified as oleum or fuming sulphuric acid, affected locations within a five-kilometre radius of the plant. Authorities said the evacuation was carried out as a precautionary measure to prevent health risks.
