Center zone dominates semifinals of 2nd Inter Zonal Senior Women Boxing Championship
GUNTUR: On the day three at the NTR stadium, Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, semifinal action continued in full swing at the 2nd Inter Zonal Senior Women Boxing Championship. The field of contention got tougher with each bout as players like P Nirosha (48kg) representing South Zone, Geeta Solanki (54kg) of central zone and Aruna Mishra (69kg) standing in from East Zone had already made a place in the finals displaying some unrelenting action on the first day of semi-final bouts.
The day got off to a blistering start when, in the fly weight division, Richa Sharma of the Central Zone bundled Pooja Bundle fighting for the West Zone, allowing her to score just one point, before the referee intervened to stop the fight. The feisty boxer from Uttar Pradesh made a place in the final with a thumping win leading 11:1.
In the fly weight category, bronze medalist at the recently concluded 34th National Games,
Dolly Singh of Andhra Pradesh, had little trouble downing Ritu Ranga of Haryana, a silver medalist at the 5th Senior Women North India Boxing Championship. She claimed a final birth with a 6:2 victory on points. “I fought my usual style and relied more on technique rather than power. I am well prepared for the finals and believe I have a good chance to win the title. Playing here has been a good exposure for me and a brilliant learning curve”, remarked a confident Dolly.
The next bout of the day took place between last year’s junior national champion, Andhra Pradesh’s G Sujatha and recently crowned Central Zone champion Kavita Bhatt of Central Zone. After a close encounter it was Kavita who got the better of her opponent winning on points 2:1.
In the most anticipated clash of the day in the middle weight category, Jagriti from the Center Zone, a bronze medal winner at the 11th National Championships took on Swarna Sikha Biswal of East Zone. Dominating the bout form the get go, Jagriti proved too much to handle for Swarna, she was leading 2:0 when the referee had to intervene handing over the win to the most acclaimed player. A win for Jagriti also meant the Center Zone registering it's dominance in the finals with 6 of its players making the final cut. "We are very happy and proud of our boxers. They have performed exceptionally well and have given us a chance to to become champions at the national level", exclaimed DN Yadav, manager, Center Zone.
