CHENNAI: The heat is on England skipper Alastair Cook. There is speculation over his future as England captain, with Joe Root being identified as a likely successor. Cook, though, still managed a grin on his face as he walked out to address the media ahead of the fifth Test on Thursday.
Although England have put up a brave fight in the series, Cook's captaincy and strategy have been questionable in crunch situations.
1x1 polls
England batted for almost half of the final day's play in their second innings in the first Test in Rajkot and India eventually drew the match by four wickets.
When set a target of 405 in about five sessions in the second Test in Visakhapatnam, Cook & Co indulged in a 'blockathon' only to lose by 246 runs. On a turning track in Mumbai, they opted to play only two spinners, having played three in the previous three Tests. Moeen Ali (2/174) and Adil Rashid (4/192) ended up bowling 53 and 55.3 overs respectively as India scored over 600.
Asked about the tactical blunders, Cook turned philosophical. "You get judged on your results, don't you, as a captain? When you lose matches, you get criticism. You're under fire. It happens to everyone. When Virat loses games, he'll get criticised. That is part and parcel of it. When you are part of the leadership group, you live and die by those decisions," Cook said. "There is one thing I can't be criticised for. It is the togetherness, the desire and the way the lads have fought. We have no regrets."
Cook, who has already stated that Root is ready to lead England at the end of the last match, said, "The moment he (Root) got off the plane in India (2012), you knew he was ready for international cricket. Every challenge that's been thrown at him he's handled. So I don't think anything over the next 10 years will faze him."
Kohli too backs Root
India skipper Virat Kohli too echoed the views of his English counterpart and mentioned that Root is "equipped" to handle the role of captaincy. "Joe is an outstanding player. He is very positive, always thinks of any situation as an opportunity. I don't know what captaincy would do to that. Joe looks like one who has the temperament to do it. But you can tell when you actually get into the scheme of things and how he reacts to it himself. Only he can answer that question. But whatever I have seen of him as a player and the way he conducts himself on the field, I think he is equipped well enough to handle it," he added.
