NEW DELHI: Tensions between India and
Pakistan may be at an all-time high, but cricket once again has proved that it sure is the best possible medium to bridge any gap between the two countries, and at least, momentarily, ease the tension.
A classic beyond the borders story was shared by Pakistan woman cricketer
Kainat Imtiaz on Monday, who is representing her country in the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup in England.
Imtiaz posted a photo on Instagram with Indian woman pacer,
Jhulan Goswami, stating that it was because of Goswami that she took up cricket as a profession.
If you were to ask budding young Indian cricketers from the 90s who they idolised growing up, often the answer would have been the legendary Wasim Akram. And Goswami certainly is a legend in the women’s circuit and it comes as no surprise that the Indian pacer could make such a telling impact on Imtiaz.
The Pakistan pacer went on to share an anecdote that it was during the 2005 Asia Cup held in Pakistan that she saw Goswami, the fastest woman bowler at that time. She was the ball picker during the tournament and was mightily impressed by Goswami that she decided to choose cricket as a career, specifically, fast bowling. And it was a proud moment for her to play against Goswami in a World Cup match.
Imitaz also posted a picture with former India women’s captain
Anjum Chopra, with the caption: ‘Its was an honour meeting this legend’
