'No woman should have to endure such trauma': MPCA on Australian cricketers being stalked, molested in Indore
Two Australian women cricketers participating in the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup were stalked and one was molested by a motorcycle-borne man in Indore, Madhya Pradesh on Thursday morning. The police arrested the suspect, Akil Khan, on Friday based on his motorcycle number provided by a bystander.
The Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association expressed their distress in a statement: "No woman should ever have to endure such trauma, and our thoughts and support are with those impacted by this distressing incident. This unfortunate event has deeply affected everyone from MPCA, who cherishes the values of respect, safety, and dignity of women."
The MPCA acknowledged the players' resilience: "It is truly inspiring to see the players rise above this painful experience and continue to compete with courage and determination, carrying the pride of their nation on their shoulders in the match against South Africa."
The association apologized to the Australian team: "As the host, MPCA extends sincere apologies to the Australian women's team for this deeply distressing and unfortunate incident while in our city, known for safety, grace, and hospitality."
The MPCA noted that local police and administration have consistently provided security for official team movements, including visits to venues like the Mahakaal temple. They suggested examining whether the players had requested security coverage for this particular outing.
The incident occurred when the two players were walking towards a café from their hotel in the Khajrana Road area. The man on a motorcycle followed them and inappropriately touched one of the players before riding away.
The players immediately contacted their team security officer, Danny Simmons, sharing their live location. Simmons forwarded this information to the local security liaison officer, enabling police to reach the spot quickly.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Himani Mishra met the players and recorded their statements. A first information report was registered under sections 74 and 78 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the MIG police station.
Sub-Inspector Nidhi Raghuvanshi confirmed that the accused, Akil Khan, has prior criminal cases against him, and investigation is ongoing.
Cricket Australia confirmed the incident, stating that two team members were approached and touched inappropriately by a motorcyclist while walking to a café in Indore. They confirmed the matter was reported to police.
State Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya called the incident shameful and demanded strict action, stating it was "a matter concerning the country's prestige and honour."
