NEW DELHI: Pakistan players have been penalised with a 20 percent deduction from their match fees for failing to maintain the required over-rate in the World Cup league game against South Africa. Pakistan narrowly lost the match by a single wicket.
"The ICC match referee Richie Richardson imposed the sanction after the Pakistan team was ruled to be four overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration," the ICC said in a release.

Under Article 2.22 of the ICC's 'Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel,' which pertains to minimum over-rate violations, players are fined five percent of their match fee for each over their team fails to complete within the allotted time.
Babar Azam acknowledged his guilt regarding the violation and accepted the proposed penalty, obviating the necessity for a formal hearing.
The charge was issued by on-field umpires Alex Wharf and Paul Reiffel, with support from third umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire Richard Kettleborough.
Pakistan has experienced defeat in four of their six World Cup matches and is effectively ruled out of contention for a semifinal spot.
