'You have to entertain...': Ian Botham credits England's Bazball style for reviving Test cricket

NEW DELHI: Renowned England fast-bowling all-rounder Ian Botham has attributed the resurgence of crowds in Test cricket to the side's Bazball style of play, spearheaded by head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes.
Since the inception of the McCullum-Stokes regime, England have embraced a fearless and aggressively attacking approach to the game, aptly termed as 'Bazball'. This bold strategy has seen the team secure victories in 15 out of 24 Tests, revitalizing interest in Test cricket among fans.

Despite facing setbacks, such as their recent loss in the second Test against India in Visakhapatnam, where they succumbed by 106 runs, England's unwavering commitment to Bazball ensured they fought valiantly till the end.
Speaking on SEN Radio, Botham highlighted the significance of entertaining cricket in drawing crowds back to the sport.

"You are entertainers at the end of the day and if you want people to come to the games, you have to entertain," he emphasized.
Botham emphasized that the era of slow-paced cricket is behind us, and spectators now demand an exhilarating brand of cricket characterized by dominance and flair.
Under the Bazball philosophy, England has witnessed a remarkable turnaround in Test cricket attendance, with stadiums frequently selling out for all five days of play—a phenomenon previously unheard of.
Botham expressed optimism about the rejuvenated state of Test cricket, asserting that the sport is now healthier than it has been in years.
Looking ahead to the ongoing Test series against India, where England are tied 1-1 with three matches remaining, Botham praised the team's aggressive mindset and predicted that other nations would soon adopt a similar approach to playing Test cricket.
"I think it's rubbed off (onto other teams)," he remarked. "Test cricket has become more impressive which I think is important," he added, highlighting the positive impact of Bazball on the sport's global landscape.
With the third Test set to commence in Rajkot on February 15, cricket enthusiasts eagerly anticipate witnessing more enthralling displays of Bazball from the England team.
