MUMBAI: A brilliant hat-trick by Andre Moritz lit up the Navi Mumbai skyline as
Mumbai City FC scored a fluent 5-0 win over
FC Pune City in their first home match in the
Indian Super League (ISL) at the DY Patil Stadium on Saturday.
The 3-0 drubbing they suffered at the hands of Atletico de Kolkata nearly a week ago was quickly forgotten as Mumbai began the rout of their western neighbours with a goal after barely 12 minutes.
By the 36th minute, Pune were only playing for time as Mumbai raced to a 3-0 lead with Moritz scoring two and Subash Singh, a Mumbai boy having cut his teeth with Air India, scoring the third.
Moritz added his third (and the team's fourth) in the second half before Johan Letzelter joined the party and scored the fifth to complete a calamitous outing for Pune. After the horrors of the opening match, Mumbai chose to adopt a rather conservative approach, hoping to catch Pune on the counter while retaining their shape at the back. With Jan Stohanzl staying back deep in the centre of the midfield, they were ready to take on the might of Pune's David Trezeguet and Dudu Omagbemi.
But Pune had only one shot at goal throughout the match and that came when Trezeguet's back volley bounced off the bar.
The Pune defence, however, was at sixes and sevens as Mumbai chose to attack from the right.
Moritz, standing wide on the right, received the ball from Larindika Ralte in the centre, cut in past a few defenders and smashed in to set the pace.
He followed it with a goal from a corner for his second. Subash added the third when he moved in from the right and smashed it in past the goalkeeper.
