CHANDIGARH: St John's School, Sector 26, struck a hat-trick by winning the St Soldier's Football Trophy for the third time in succession at the St Soldier's International School, Sector 28 ground on Friday. St John's blanked hosts St Soldier's 3-0 in a keenly contested final.
St Soldier goalkeeper Gaurav Ahlawat virtually gave away two goals to their opponents on a platter.
For St John's Amaan scored a brace and Manraj scored one goal. For St John's, Amaan opened the account in the third minute when he caught St Soldier custodian Gaurav napping with a lob from the left flank.
The second goal came rather luckily when Amaan's 13-yard rising drive was muffed by the goalkeeper and ended up inside the bars in the 20th minute.
St John's kept up the pressure and rounded of the tally with one more goal in the 47th minutes. Manraj's top-of the D straight shot from 20 yards saw St Soldier'S goalkeeper erring once again as Gaurav fumbled to collect it. His second effort to stop the ball failed as the ball crossed over the goalline to give John's a comprehensive victory.
St Soldier had their chance to score in the 27th minute when Sunil Dhankar's powerful shot from close range was saved by John's goalkeeper Amogh.
Two players of St Soldier's and three players from St John's were shown yellow cards in the first half for their un-sportsmanship behaviour. Mohak Mehra and Subhakarman of St Soldier and Praseej, Hunar and Manraj of St John's were penalized for on the field misbehaviour.
Anuj of St Soldier International emerged the highest scorer of the tournament. Sahil of Strawberry Fields and Krishna of St John's were adjudged the best goalkeeper and the best player, respectively.
