Marquis Maze, who was an experienced wide receiver at Alabama and has experience playing at the collegiate football level in Alabama, publicly criticized Kalen DeBoer's recruiting methods due to perceptions that the scholarship offers came rapidly and did not come from a top-flight athlete in Maze's mind. Maze is of the opinion that Alabama is still considered the best in recruiting.Maze, who played under Saban in Tuscaloosa, took to social media to criticize what he sees as rushed evaluations. He suggested Alabama is offering prospects who were not top options on their high school teams and admitted he has been unimpressed after watching recent recruits’ film. Although he emphasized support for the program and hoped the players succeed, Maze made it clear he feels disappointed by the direction of some decisions.

Why Kalen DeBoer’s recruiting style feels different at Alabama

The disconnect largely comes down to timing and rules. DeBoer is operating under a new NCAA landscape, including a 105-scholarship model and heavier reliance on early commitments and the transfer portal. That marks a sharp contrast from Saban’s slower, development-focused approach built around the traditional 85-scholarship limit. DeBoer’s method is faster, more numbers-driven, and designed to address roster needs immediately.
From a results standpoint, Alabama has not fallen behind. As of February 1, 2026, the Crimson Tide’s 2026 class ranks fifth nationally with a strong average player rating, according to Rivals. The staff continues to recruit powerhouse programs like IMG Academy and Mater Dei, where even depth players often project as high-level college contributors. Alabama has also landed clear blue-chip talent, including five-star running back Ezavier Crowell, who reclassified to enroll early.A second notable change has been DeBoer’s aggressive use of the transfer portal. After losing several offensive and defensive linemen from Alabama, he was able to quickly bring in experienced players to fill those needs rather than waiting for development over the long term. The coaching staff has also focused on retaining veteran players who are important to the program at both the quarterback and secondary positions. The criticism from Maze demonstrates a larger conflict between traditional ways of doing things and advancements in how we view college football today; although some alumni feel uncomfortable due to these changes occurring quickly, DeBoer has built his program around what he believes will be necessary in order to win today in college football. Only time will tell if this system produces championships, as well as whether or not these concerns will dissipate or get louder over time.
