Former racer Joey Mawson finally breaks silence following acquittal in Michael Schumacher nurse sexual assault case, gives update on future
Former racing driver Joey Mawson has spoken publicly for the first time after being cleared of sexual assault allegations linked to an incident at Michael Schumacher’s family home in Switzerland. The Australian, 30, was acquitted by a Swiss court after judges found there was not enough evidence to support a conviction.
The verdict brought an end to a legal battle that had lasted for several years. Mawson had been accused of sexually assaulting a nurse employed by the Schumacher family following a gathering at the Formula One legend’s residence near Geneva. He consistently denied the allegations and maintained throughout the case that any intimacy between them was consensual.
Following the court’s decision, Mawson released a statement thanking his lawyers, family, friends, and supporters for standing by him during the lengthy proceedings. He said he appreciated the efforts of his legal team and expressed satisfaction that the Swiss judicial process had reached a conclusion in his favor. The former driver added that he was now ready to move forward with his life and career after being cleared of all charges.
Mawson also revealed plans to return to motorsport. He said racing has always remained his greatest passion and that he is eager to get back behind the wheel. According to the former driver, his attention is now fixed on future opportunities rather than past events.
The case centered on allegations made by a nurse who claimed she was assaulted after a staff gathering at the Schumacher family’s home more than six years ago. Court documents showed that after finishing her shift, she joined several people, including Mawson, for drinks. She later felt unwell and was taken to a bedroom to rest.
Prosecutors alleged that Mawson entered the room and assaulted the woman while she was unconscious. However, the court ruled that the accusation could not be proven beyond reasonable doubt. During testimony, Mawson stated that he spent part of the night in the room and believed their encounter had been consensual. He also acknowledged consuming a significant amount of alcohol and said he could not recall every detail of the evening.
After the verdict, Mawson’s lawyer described the outcome as fair and said his client could finally begin planning for the future. The nurse expressed disappointment with the ruling, saying the past several years had been extremely difficult and that she felt the judgment had failed to recognize her experience.
The Schumacher family was not accused of any wrongdoing and was not involved in the criminal allegations. The case attracted significant attention because it took place at the home of seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher, who has remained out of public view since suffering severe injuries in a skiing accident in 2013.
