American alpine ski legend Lindsey Vonn shared an emotional moment with fans after a devastating crash during the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics downhill event. The accident happened only 13 seconds into her run, ending her race almost immediately and leaving the crowd in shock. The 41-year-old skier screamed in pain on the slope before medical staff rushed to help her. According to event coverage and Olympic reports, she was airlifted to a hospital in Milan Cortina with a broken leg.

The fall came just one week after she had already suffered a complete ACL rupture, making the situation even more painful for the Olympic champion. Because of the injury, Vonn now expects to lose her World Cup downhill leader position, a title she had held since the start of the season. The skiing icon later opened up about the moment on Instagram, where she posted photos from the slopes and explained why the title meant so much to her.

Even while recovering from the crash, Lindsey Vonn returned to the gym to begin rehabilitation. But she knows the season title she fought for is likely slipping away. In a heartfelt message on Instagram, where she has around 3.6 million followers, Vonn spoke honestly about the situation.

She wrote, “Well… I’ve had the red leader bib from the first race of the season until now, but in all likelihood tomorrow will be my last day as number one.” The American star explained that very few people expected her to even reach that position after years away from the sport.

She said, “At the beginning of the season, no one would have believed I would even be close to this position. But winning the title was my goal and I came painfully close.”

Vonn also reminded fans how hard the comeback had been. After retiring from alpine skiing in 2019, she surprised the sports world by returning in December 2024. She had previously dealt with serious knee problems and even underwent partial knee replacement surgery. Despite those challenges, she performed strongly all season.

She wrote, “I was on the podium in every downhill race, including two wins. I clawed my way back to number one in the world after being retired for six years.” Still, the injury means she may not get the chance to defend that lead.

The moment clearly hit her emotionally. Vonn admitted, “Why does a title mean so much to me? Why am I crying over a crystal trophy?” She then answered her own question by talking about her love for the sport.

“It’s because skiing has always been the thing I love most. It brings me incredible joy,” she wrote. Even with the disappointment, she said the memories from this season will stay with her forever.

The Olympic champion added, “Not having one more title does not make this season less extraordinary. My tears just mean I care.”

Vonn remains one of the most decorated skiers in history. She won Olympic downhill gold at the 2010 Vancouver Games and later earned a bronze medal at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.

Whether she returns to racing again remains uncertain, but her message made one thing clear, the journey itself still means everything to her.
