Jim Hartung, an Olympic gold medalist and one of the most respected names in American gymnastics, has died at the age of 65. The former gymnast and longtime coach passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2026. His death was confirmed by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Athletics Department on Sunday. In its statement, the department said, “The Nebraska Athletic Department is deeply saddened to announce the passing of assistant men’s gymnastics coach Jim Hartung on Saturday night.”Jim Hartung was best known for winning Olympic gold at the 1984 Summer Olympics as part of the United States men’s national artistic gymnastics team. Beyond the Olympics, he was a proud Nebraska Cornhuskers star, a national champion, and a coach who shaped young athletes for nearly two decades. His passing has left the gymnastics world in shock, especially in Nebraska, where he was seen as a true legend of the sport.

Jim Hartung’s Olympic journey, Nebraska legacy, coaching career, and family life

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Jim Hartung competed for the Nebraska Cornhuskers from 1979 to 1982. During those years, he won seven individual NCAA titles and earned 22 All-America honors.
According to Huskers.com, he also helped Nebraska win four straight NCAA team championships, a rare and historic achievement.In his final college season, Hartung won Nebraska’s first-ever Nissen-Emery Award, given to the top male college gymnast in the country. His Olympic dream was delayed in 1980 when the United States boycotted the Moscow Games. Still, he did not give up. Four years later, he reached the top of the sport in Los Angeles, winning Olympic gold with the U.S. team.After retiring from competition, Hartung stayed close to the sport. He served as Nebraska’s assistant men’s gymnastics coach for 19 seasons. Over the years, he earned many honors and was inducted into the U.S. Gymnastics Hall of Fame, the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame, and the World Acrobatic Society.Away from gymnastics, Hartung was a family man. He was married to his wife, Lisa, who stood by him during his long health battle. The couple had four children: Jim, Nick, Jake, and Hannah.In 2010, Hartung was diagnosed with throat cancer while judging the World Gymnastics Championships in Belgium. In a 2015 interview shared by Huskers.com, he recalled, “I wore a tie all day, and when I took it off, I rubbed my neck and found a bump.”He later said, “I was diagnosed with a type of throat cancer that was right behind my voice box.”Hartung went through radiation and chemotherapy and lost a large amount of weight. “I started the ordeal at 185 pounds and by June, I was down to 119 pounds and struggling,” he shared.Despite fear and pain, he survived.
