Is the Dodgers' Offseason Dominance Proof They're the New 'Evil Empire'? Dave Roberts Responds!

Though the Los Angeles Dodgers just emerged as the winners of the 2024 World Series, Bobby Roberts, the manager, carries an "I'm not content" look on his face. The team is branded as the "new version of the Evil Empire," a name that reminds us of the New York Yankees' days of power that go by. By the way, Roberts will never allow it.

Dave Roberts Fires Back at Critics: Are the Dodgers Just Playing Smart, Not Evil?

But hey, let's talk about the perception given to the Dodgers. It shall not come isolatedly from how the Dodgers now dominate off-season moves, specifically this past winter. Blake Snell, the Young winner; Michael Conforto, at the All-Star level; and other high-profile players have all been added forcibly. Truly, with the type of money Los Angeles is throwing around this winter, someone has raised their eyebrows in doubt about Los Angeles. At least Roberts isn't apologetic about it.He wistfully spoke of the envy felt by fans in other fan bases: I think the moniker "Evil Empire" is just a way for people to root against somebody,"
And make no mistake, the Dodgers have pulled off something really impressive this offseason. In addition to Snell (five years, $182 million) and Conforto (one year, $17 million), they acquired an All-Star reliever in Tanner Scott, a two-time All-Star, Kirby Yates, and also signed Roki Sasaki, an NPB player, and Hyeseong Kim, a KBO player, from the international market.
However, Roberts is firm in his stance that the team should not only depend on throwing money to get better. "I think the frustration for fans in their individual ball clubs is they want to have the same kind of motivation that our ownership does. I still think that fans would like their teams to invest rather than sit on their hands."as Roberts puts it—such a high standard of excellence, good business sense, and a locker room that ensures player retention.

Even though some critics would say that the Dodgers are the new “Evil Empire,” Roberts and his crew are not at fault; the brain is the tool. The championship club has got to do what it does best: getting the best players it can attract. It’s not wickedness; it’s just hard commercial sense.
