The New York Yankees made a splashy offseason trade on Wednesday, sending minor league first baseman T.J. Rumfield to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for hard-throwing right-handed reliever Angel Chivilli, according to Jack Curry of YES Network. The deal is the latest signal that the Yankees are seeking to bolster their bullpen depth while also turning over just about every stone on the back end of their roster before the start of the 2026 season. To clear a spot for Chivilli on the 40-man roster, the team designated outfielder Michael Siani for assignment. The trade is a win-now, lose-later bet on upside and development for New York. Chivilli has power stuff and big-league experience, but hasn't put it all together yet. On the Rockies' end, they acquire a productive corner infielder with interesting upside offensively who can fill multiple spots in their organization as they continue down a long-term rebuilding path.

Yankees look to unlock Angel Chivilli’s potential

Angel Chivilli, who is currently 23 years old, comes to the Bronx following two seasons in the Rockies organization. In 2025, he pitched in 43 games for Colorado as a reliever, posting a 1-5 record and a 7.06 ERA. The surface numbers were rough, but the Yankees are optimistic about his raw tools, notably a fastball that can reach the upper 90s and a breaking ball with bat-missing potential.
In 90.2 big league innings, Chivilli has struck out 71 batters and walked 33. A chance to pitch at Coors Field would likely have contributed to his bloated numbers, and the Yankees believe a change of scenery to a more neutral climate, along with the advances of their pitching development program, will allow him space forward. The organization has recently done good work developing comparable relievers, and Chivilli will fight for a role in the bullpen this Spring Training.

Rockies add first baseman T.J. Rumfield to system

The Rockies received T.J. Rumfield, a 25-year-old first baseman who was at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2025. Rumfield had an excellent hitting season, compiling a. 285 with 16 home runs, 31 doubles, and a handsome OBP. His steady hitting and defensive reliability had made him one of the Yankees’ better minor league hitters.Selected by the Phillies in 2021 before being acquired by New York, Rumfield has worked his way up the minor league ranks while garnering praise for his approach at the plate and his glove work at first. He also adds depth for the Rockies at a position that has been devoid of stability, and could compete for major league time this season if he continues to rake.
