Seiko Darvish had already made a name for herself in elite wrestling sports and achieved impressive milestones that left her competitors in dust. All of this happened before she even met San Diego Padres star Yu Darvish.

She didn’t stop there and moved into coaching, tackling challenges that few could manage and influence athletes in ways that caught global attention. Seiko Darvish’s early life in Japan

Seiko Darvish, originally Seiko Yamamoto, was born on August 22, 1980, in Kawasaki, Kanagawa, Japan. She comes from a prominent family in the world of combat ports. Seiko’s father Ikuei Yamamoto, represented Japan in wrestling at the 1972 Munich Olympics, as well as her siblings made their mark as top martial artists, including her brother Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto and sister Miyuu Yamamoto.

Seiko started her wrestling journey when she was young, training in the sport which has shaped her family’s legacy. Due to her hard work she was reputed as one of Japan's most skilled female wrestlers throughout her competitive career.


Seiko Darvish won four world titles in a ruthless five-year run, she secured four gold medals at the World Wrestling Championships in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2003, making her a leading figure in women’s freestyle wrestling during those years.

She did all of that before women weren't even a part of the Olympics. Seiko aimed to qualify for the 2004 Olympics but lost to Saori Yoshida at the Japan Queen’s Cup, which kept her from the Games.

In 2007, Seiko retired from competitive wrestling but made a quick return in 2009 to win the Poland Open.

After retirement Seiko shifted her focus to coaching. She became a coach of the Women's Freestyle Wrestling Team for the United States, helping to create one of the most iconic moments in American wrestling history.

Helen Maroulis won the first-ever Olympic gold medal for the United States in women’s freestyle wrestling during the 2016 Rio Olympics through the help of Seiko's guidance.

This historic win was particularly noteworthy as Maroulis defeated Saori Yoshida — the same competitor who had kept Seiko from Olympic participation highlighting the historical importance of Seiko’s coaching in women’s wrestling.

How Sieko Yamamoto met Yu Darvish

Seiko Darvish’s life became linked with baseball player Yu Darvish in the mid-2010s. They started dating around 2014 and welcomed their first child, a son, on July 29, 2015, before tying the knot.

In 2016, Seiko and Yu Darvish got married, officially becoming a couple as Yu chased his MLB dreams with the San Diego Padres. Unlike many celebrity couples, they’ve opted to keep their personal life mostly private, though they do share some family moments on social media.
