CHANDIGARH: It has been a difficult couple of years for WNBA star Azura Stevens. The Chicago Sky forward has been troubled by injuries. The 25-year-old has spent the offseason at her hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina after she underwent knee surgery last year.
Speaking to reporters via video conferencing, Aura said: “I love basketball. Just the process of getting back to the court kept me motivated throughout the rehabilitation.”
“The time away from the court taught me to accept things with open arms.
Things don’t always go the way that you planned, but that’s the life you will have to accept it and move forward,” she added.
Before getting injured, Azura Stevens was in the form of her life. She started all 13 games for the Sky and posted career highs in points (11.5 per game) and rebounds (5.9 per game) while shooting 50 per cent from the field.
“I just want to improve. I am just focused on consistency. I am again coming back from the Injury. Consistency will be the key, and the main goal is to end the season without getting injured,” said Azura, who has signed a one-year extension with the Chicago Bulls.
Azura Stevens has been one of the vocal supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement in the USA. WNBA players spoke out vigorously against Georgia Senator Kelley Loeffler over her stance about the Black Lives Matter movement. Loeffler, the co-owner of the WNBA team Atlanta Dream, lost in the Senate runoff, but she also had to sell the team.
Speaking on her stand, she said: “We did it because it was the right thing to do. WNBA has set an example. We’re going to keep taking a stand, no matter how long it takes.”
At the same time, Azura Stevens also believed that one should not pressure those athletes who don’t want to speak publicly on social and political issues.
“They should also be given their own space, that’s what I believe. Taking a stand or not really depends on each athlete. When I watched the Michael Jordan documentary, where he talked about that, how he just wanted to focus on basketball. There’s nothing wrong with that. If that’s your decision and that’s what you want to do, that’s your choice. It doesn’t mean MJ wasn’t fighting for stuff behind the scenes,” she said.
