NEW DELHI:
Sarabjot Singh, an Indian shooter, secured an Olympic quota spot in the men's 10m air pistol event at the 4th Asian Shooting Championships held in Kuwait. Sarabjot showcased remarkable composure and skill to finish in third place in the finals of the men's 10m air pistol event. This impressive achievement marks India's first quota place in the pistol events for the upcoming Olympic Games.
Sarabjot's journey to the Olympic quota began with a solid qualification score of 581, which secured him the eighth spot among the top eight competitors. In the finals, he continued to display his excellence by registering a score of 221.1, finishing behind the two Chinese shooters, Zhang Yifan, who won gold with a score of 243.7, and Liu Jinyao, who claimed silver with a score of 242.1.
Sarabjot's performance was particularly crucial because China had already exhausted its two quota spots in the event, and only one of the two available spots for Koreans remained. Sarabjot's high finish ensured that he earned the much-coveted Olympic quota place for India, an achievement that is both significant and promising for the country's shooting community.
In the women's air pistol event, despite the strong efforts of five Indian participants, none of them were able to secure a spot among the top eight competitors. Rhythm Sangwan, Esha Singh, Surbhi Rao, Ruchita Vinerkar, and Palak all showcased their shooting skills, but they fell short of making it to the final eight.
Sarabjot Singh's remarkable achievement is a testament to the caliber of Indian shooters and their potential to shine on the international stage. This Olympic quota is a source of great pride for India and a stepping stone for the country's shooters as they prepare for the upcoming Olympic Games.
